In a Nutshell:

1.  Never use a computer on the Internet without up-to-date security software.

These FREE applications can all be found and installed at http://ninite.com

Many people effectively protect their computer with the first item alone - "Essentials" or "Microsoft Security Essentials".

2.  Turn on Automatic Updates of your operating system (eg Windows 7) and any other software that offers updates.

3.   Put security on any home wireless internet. If you've done this properly, then any new device will need to have a password entered before it can use your internet connection.

4.  Be careful when browsing, emailing and "Facebooking".  There are too many rules to list them all, but here are some examples:
  • You are never the 999,999th visitor to a site, and even if you were, the prizes would be fake.  Nor can you get a flat stomach or a new boyfriend/girlfriend by clicking on a link.
  • Avoid installing free software unless you are certain that it comes from a trustworthy source (like ninite.com).
  • You don't need screensavers, animated cursors, game cheats, or other junk software.  Don't install them!
