In a nutshell:

Anybody who creates an original digital product (text, images, animations, sounds, music, videos) owns that product as their intellectual property, or “IP”.  IP exists in other forms – for example, ideas, inventions, brand names, artistic designs, and diagrams.

There are rules and laws about how people can use others’ intellectual property.  If the IP is sold to the public (music CD's, mp3's, computer games) then you should assume that you cannot copy it.  If you are trying to publish to a wide audience, make a profit, or win a prize using IP that is not your own then you need to seek permission and advice.

The rules are simpler (?) for school situations.  Students do not need to seek permission to copy “a reasonable amount” of material for study purposes.

A “reasonable amount” is 10%, or one complete chapter.  This amount varies – for example if the work is not available for purchase then you can copy more.

Specifically, a student can probably copy without seeking permission
·         a whole article from a newspaper, magazine or website.
·         individual artworks, graphs, illustrations and photographs that are not available for purchase.
…. Provided the total copying doesn’t exceed a “reasonable amount”.

Any copied material should be attributed to its author.  To pretend that copied material is your own work (plagiarism) is both morally wrong and a breach of “moral rights” clauses in Australian Copyright laws.

The above is my paraphrase of material found at
http://www.copyright.org.au/find-an-answer/browse-by-what-you-do/students/

I have prepared this paraphase to introduce the topic.  Copyright laws are complex, and there are exceptions to the generalisations I've made.   If in doubt you should seek formal advice.
